Update on the Genoa road system following the collapse of the Morandi bridge

04/09/2018

Update on the Genoa road system following the collapse of the Morandi bridge Ports of Genoa is continuing its commitment to define the road system within the port areas, for heavy goods vehicles heading for the quays of Sampierdarena, in the shortest possible space of time. Tomorrow, on 30 August, a further inspection will be conducted by experts (ADSP Port Authority for the Western Ligurian Sea, the Harbour Master and Genoa City Council) to outline the road system for goods. Broadly speaking, this will involve building an internal road to cross ILVA which is connected to the Genova Aeroporto motorway exit; creating an area for parking heavy goods vehicles awaiting operations in the terminals of the right-hand side of the Polcevera river adjacent to the Via San Giovanni d'Acri roundabout; predisposing a road on the right-hand side of the Polcevera river, in the vicinity of Società per Cornigliano, in order to create a direct link between the Bolzaneto motorway exit and the Cornigliano area; and the urgent building of a second bridge over the Polcevera to improve access to the port areas. This solution may be adopted in two stages: adding a second bridge to the existing one with a provisional bridge at sea, to be built by the Military Engineers, and a definitive bridge to be constructed upstream of the existing provisional bridge (Fincantieri Construction).
In addition, on 30 August 2018 an executive decree was issued by the Council concerning the road system, involving temporary changes to vehicle circulation in the roads of Sampierdarena and Cornigliano.
The Department for Mobility and Transport – Regulation Office – has ordered the following provisions with immediate effect and until further notice:
-Transit prohibited from 7 am until 9.30 am and from 5 pm to 7.30 pm for vehicles with a mass greater than 7.5 t used for transporting items in the following highway segments:
-Lungomare Canepa seafront road (on the section between the slip road descending from the spiral bridge in the direction of Lungomare Canepa and Via Guido Rossa)
-Via Guido Rossa in the section between (but not including) the Fiumara roundabout and Lungomare Canepa
-A maximum speed limit of 30 km/h in the following roads: Via Fiamme Gialle, Via Pietro Chiesa, Via di Francia and Via Cornigliano

The Council has also confirmed that work on the Lungomare Canepa seafront road will finish at the end of the September.
The Councillor for Maintenance and Public Works of Genoa City Council, Paolo Fanghella, has stipulated the timeframe for starting one of the works which will ease traffic in the west of the city. “The company is working three shifts, and last night the lighting was activated. Tonight, the road lanes will be switched to allow the workers to work on the part of the carriageway closest to the sea. The road,” Fanghella stresses, “will be open at the end of September with no less than five straight lanes without any obstacles. We hope that this will help traffic flow more freely in a part of the city which is experiencing problems in the wake of the collapse of the Morandi bridge.”
